University Information System

Since early part of this year, I have been in regular meetings for a big project which I am heading - the University Information System for the University of Bohol.I wrote this press release last October, 2007 about the UIS of the University of Bohol.

The University of Bohol, the first school in Bohol to use computerized systems in some aspects of its operations way back in the early 90’s, is even going more steps higher as the UB administration decided to go into full-computerization move for all its school operations to better improve its services. This progress is being undertaken by the University of Bohol in line of its thrust of providing the best services to its students, teachers and other stakeholders.

Atty. David B. Tirol, UB president and Mr. Tony Grajo, president of the Wizzard Techologies, Inc. (based in Manila) signed the contract for the University Information System (UIS) for the University of Bohol last September 26, 2007 at the office of the UB president.

The UIS, implementation of which has already been started early last month, will provide improved and more sophisticated computerization modules. The first phase of the implementation which is being undertaken already are the system modules for the registrar’s office, finance, academe, scheduling, enrollment, student services, medical and dental, information kiosks, library, and the executive information system. Phase two which is expected to be completed at the end of this year are the systems module for the alumni, Internet usage and monitoring, university accounting system, human resource management system, and web integration.

According to the University Information System project director, UB registrar Leah Tirol-Magno, few of the immediate results of the implementation of the UIS that can be felt and actually experienced by the students are the shortening of the enrolment process by more than half the time than the previous process and the absence of the filling-out of enrolment forms. Even the academic advising process (evaluation of student academic records) is now being done electronically also.

Users of the University Information System are undergoing trainings by this time. The registrar’s and finance office staff, deans, some teachers, guidance counselors, medical and dental clinic staff and administrators who will be using the system are now busy familiarizing the use of the system.

The whole system would require the installation of about fifty (50) new high-end computer units to be installed in each office that would be using the system. Some of the new computer units will be installed this week and more will be installed next week. Networking systems using high-end materials are also underway. As parallel implementations are already being done by this time, the new systems will already be fully utilized starting October 8, 2007 when the enrolment for the 2nd semester school year 2007 begins.

Upon the completion of this almost ten million pesos project, it is expected that the University of Bohol will be having the most advanced university computerization and information system in the province of Bohol and even probably in the whole region.

Blogging

I am amazed by this "new" feature of the Internet wherein I can post and publish anything I want to talk about in the Internet, so easily and so quickly. Thanks to BLOG.

Learning how to do the blogging thing is not that easy though. At first, I was so frustrated by after so many trials, at least I am now able to creat about 9 different blog sections and will still be adding some more. It's fun!

Although I still have lots of things to learn about this BLOG thing, I am not stopping. Everytime I get the chance to go on-line, I always see to it that I am able to do at least peek my BLOG accounts. Everyday, I keep on thinking what I want to write about in my blog. I always bring with me my digital camera so I can take picture and upload them to any of my blogs and write something about anything I encountered during the day.

It's just like the Friendster stuff. Everytime we took pictures of ourselves, we always say that this picture is for Friendster posting. It's another fun thing to do.

Let's wait and see what else is new in the Internet world.

Internet Literacy Program

It's my advocacy to extend Internet literacy education to as many Boholanos as possible. I started working on this advocacy in 2002, through the University of Bohol who generously provided free use of the Internet facilities of the University for this project. Since this was started, I have already taught about 15,000 young Boholanos how to use the Internet.

It's always a wonderful feeling every after the end of the 4 hour lecture and Internet hands-on session that these young individuals walk away from the Internet center, feeling so proud and happy that their day was full of adventure and they learned how to surf the electronic super highway.

When they arrived at the center, they were so innocent and most of them haven't seen or touched a computer ever in their life, so much more know Internet is all about. But after the session, they felt so good, they got a taste of how is it to be out in the other part of the world, through the Internet.

I taught them: what Internet is; why they should learn how to use the Internet; how to do research using the Internet; how to e-mail; and of course how to chat.

Although Internet is a limitless source of a lot of things to see and to learn about, all these for me are enough to learn about for first time Internet users.

I look forward to meeting these young Boholanos again in the near future and they would tell me how Internet has helped changed their lives too.

Website Making Experience

I never thought of getting into the Internet world as much as I am involved in it now. Way back in 1995, when I was first exposed to the Internet, I was only addicted to chatting (IRC), spending hours and hours infront of the computer, virtually meeting people who were miles and miles away from me. Yet it was a very amusing experience, keeping in touch with these people through the wonderful thing called - the Internet.

The Push

I got so frustrated when I found out that there was no website providing information about my home province - Bohol. All I wanted was to make information about Bohol to be available in the Internet. And so, I started to do a research on how to make a website. In 1999, after four long years of chatting and surfing in the Internet, I finally published my own website - www.bohol-island.com

The Start

I wasn't that easy. We didn't have softwares, designing tools, formal training and experience in working on a website then. Fortunately, my husband, who is also into computers, discovered how to design a website using a very simple tool using the Netscape. He also taught me how to do it and there it is, I got hooked.

Registering a domain name then wasn't that easy, the same way finding a webhost was equally not easy too. And in addition to that, I didn't own a credit card. So, I had to send US dollars to my friend in Seattle, and she paid the domain names and hosting fees for me.

Nowadays, we are very lucky because, we can buy domain names so easily. There are lots of domain name registrars around who offer special deals, such as:

$8.95 Domain Names Transfers from Dotster

Finance your Domain Name Purchase

When I started, domain names cost $35/year and only provided by NetWorkSolutions and nothing else. But now, domain names are already very affordable.

Choosing a webhost was also not easy. In my case, I had to choose a webhost who was willing to accept my terms, since I am based in the Philippines. I have ceased being connected to my first webhost. I can't even remember what was the name of that company. I am just very lucky that I found a very reliable and trustworthy webhost company whos owner and his wife has already become my friends.

However, for starters, you may choose from any of these companies:

Host Unlimited Domains on 1 Account

IX Web Hosting

PowWeb Hosting - Only $7.77 per month

Bluehost.com Web Hosting $6.95

HostRocket.Com - 1000MB 50GB - $9.95
